Lost You to L.A. - Lyrics by Paula J. Smith It’s a paper town / fresh out of pulp And the dry canals / are really an insult Lost in Laurel Canyon / hope for a breakthrough So cinematic / the way I fell for you Walk over stars / deep in the pavement Tell me you like me / if that’s entertainment Outside is a wasteland And I lost you I lost you We were an ampersand Deja vu, I lost you Hang up and listen / too tired to talk dirt is settled / now comes the aftershock. Wrote out a list / every wolf you cried See you someday / they say the web is worldwide. Outside is a wasteland And I lost you I lost you We were an ampersand Deja vu, I lost you

Last Crash Landing - Lyrics by Paula J. Smith It’s my last crash landing Won’t leave a damn man standing It’s my swan song hijinks Just a failure you thinks In the waning light I taste smoke see no stars Desolation speaks of tiny things falling apart Batteries and blankets Bandages first aid kits It’s my last crash landing Jet fuel expanding We’re the sum of parts if we get off the ground Just a phoenix story, unlikely as that sounds Take your mission statement, Tear it into shreds Parachutes are made of Multitudes of threads Get moving quick we can still triage And the world is bright like a great big collage

Never more so than on cherry red vinyl does a band get a second shot at a first impression. Silver Bars' social designation sticks easily enough: "Dream Rock / Shoegaze / Indie band from Austin." Yet when a needle touches down on the opening groove of their 2019 debut LP – newly waxed earlier this year – the watery jangle of "Pulse" sells the homegrown quartet instantly with glistening minor notes and melancholy wonderment. Like Beach House, the androgynous coo/cry/moan of Paula Smith does much of the heavy shifting alongside harmonizer/bassist Stephen Thurman, guitarist Ken Hatten, and their three guitars chiming to Johnny Wilkins' upbeat. The surf gaze of last year's video single "Lost You to L.A.," Cure-like jingle "Last Crash Landing," and the U2 guitar of B-side starter "Green Trees" all pop and soothe in the same measure. – Raoul Hernandez

Debut Album made Jack Rabid's "Top 40" reviews in The Big Takeover (NYC) Spring Issue# 84:

(Shifting Sounds)
Austin’s SB are a common case of scene vets than find a home together. Center is dreamy but also large and piercing-dreamy, like the post-Join Hands Banshees, 1980-1982 Cure, pre-War U2, and Fables of the Reconstruction R.E.M. were. Those ’80s alterna-rockers’ renown obfuscates how exceptional their guitarists were, and here’s another proto-dreampop guitar band—dominated by Paula J. Smith’s (also co-lead singer) and Ken Hatten’s succession of spine-tickling signatures like fractal patterns. Last year’s self-titled EP—from whence they pluck this debut LP’s opening “Pulse”—set their marker, and Center makes it bigger, brighter, and more fluid, with other temperate singer Stephen Thurman’s bass and Johnny Wilkins’s drum tessellations keeping it crashing and lifting. The guitars fill the speakers so crushingly, the tunes have to be as big, and they are; “Emergency” could be a Death Cab For Cutie song. Hail the pretty miasma. - Jack Rabid / The Big Takeover
