“backslide” single
(Shifting Sounds)
A debut LP is imminent, but for now single two is similar, fine fare to last fall’s “Hollow.” This Austin group features members of two other Shifting Sounds’ greats, Honeyrude guitarist Ian Lund and Magnet School bassist/producer Brandon Tucker. So far they’re doing well with a fat, blasting sound equally enraptured with post-punk, the good side of alterna-rock, and harsher Brit shoegaze. (Like Magnet School, frontman Christian Kyle’s and Lund’s big-boom guitars aim for Swervedriver’s Franklin & Hartridge’s lashing licks with exultation.) There’s a Ride-ish swing and sway, too, in drummer (ex-Honeyrude) Matt McCandless’s post-Madchester dancey rock smashing, presaging a cool-down coda that concludes this back-against-the-wall-themed boisterousness. The Austin Chronicle:
"Following the release of their glorious first song "Hollow," well- pedigreed Austin ensemble Startographers teases their (eventually) forthcoming debut with second single "Backslide." Perhaps a shade less shoegazey than the prior tune – but just a shade – "Backslide" hits that sweet spot between pop melody, Generation X angst, and psychedelic amp overload with such accuracy music lovers of a certain age may have to check their calendars to make sure it's not 1993. As before, though, these moonlighting members of Magnet School, Honeyrude, and Schatzi aren't just aping their influences – they're matching them note for tune." – Michael Toland
